Living in a Foreign Land
Have you ever encountered a Buddhist parade? There aren't too many in the US, but there are a few. They are loud and noisy! Lots of people wearing unusual festivity clothing. And so many noises and sounds and music that I cannot identify or understand. Clanging, squawking even. Bright colors. Little idols being carried on carts. Sometimes dragons even. Fireworks. Strange smells and smoke from the burning of incense. This is their way of worshiping their god and often their ancestors. (As many Buddhists mix Buddhism and ancestor worship). Suzanne and I lived for nine years in the country of Taiwan as missionaries and encountered many, many such parades. We even encountered people burning incense or spirit money on the streets. I loved being in Taiwan and all of these sights were intriguing BUT I was never once compelled to join in these parades or activities. Probably because I already had a belief system that I was content with And I perceived theirs as being WRONG. What could these Buddhists have done to persuade me to join them and to follow along? Now, I am in no danger or 'following along' or in converting from Christianity BUT I ASKED MYSELF, WHY WOULD ANY NON-CHRISTIAN WANT TO FOLLOW ME AS I FOLLOW CHRIST? Would it be because we had a good parade? Would it be because we were loud and put together a good public display of our religion?? Would it be because we had a large, pretty temple or church in their neighborhood? CAN YOU BEGIN TO EVEN IMAGINE HOW ODD OUR CHRISTIAN PARADES AND WORSHIP SERVICES ARE TO THOSE WHO DO NOT HAVE A CULTURAL CONTEXT FOR SUCH??!! Maybe even like a noisy gong and a clanging cymbol. Now, I am not saying what you should or shouldn't be doing. Just want you to step back and ask yourself these questions: “What could these Buddhist do to make me want to join them and their religion?” “What would attract me to their belief system?” “Why would I want to join a Buddhist parade (or any other different religion's parade)? Now, I am not putting down any other religion (We each have the freedom to worship as we believe.) And I am a firm believer in Christianity and I believe that there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be save. SALVATION THROUGH JESUS ONLY! BUT I am concerned that we, Christians, may not really understand what brings men to Christ. As we move further and further into a non-Christian culture in our land, I believe that we should be asking ourselves some questions. (No, this is not addressing our responsibilities as citizens) Why would they want to join our parade? Again, I am not saying here what we should or shouldn't be doing. BUT what brings men to Christ? HOPE! PEACE! JOY! SALVATION! LOVE! When we first planted the church in Taiwan, almost 70% of those who came on any Sunday morning were un-Christianized Taiwanese. Non-believers with no Christian context. “I feel so much peace here," one man said to me. Many would come for years before they made a decision for Christ because of the hope, peace and love. This lead many to Jesus Himself We must ask ourselves: What are we peddling? A Christian belief system and a practice of religion? Or HOPE, PEACE, JOY, SALVATION AND LOVE THROUGH A RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS CHRIST? (And yes, there is much more that could be said...) By Robby Lindsay
I try to use this platform primarily for posting about my family and farm. I purposely avoid political comments. Not that I don’t have political options. Quite the opposite. I am HIGHLY opinionated—though I’m neither a registered Republican nor Democrat. I left the Republican Party in 1999 when I finally figured out, they were the opposite side of the same coin. I quit the news media at the same time. Instead, I’m simply conservative with a smidgen of Libertarian thrown in. My decision 20 years ago makes even more sense today. Having said that, I have absolutely no regard for politician’s, presidents or Supreme Court justices or mayors or media figures or dog catchers, who believe in, support, or work to keep abortion legal. I have utter contempt and disdain for them. Anyone who would kill an innocent child or support this barbaric act has a terrible moral heart problem. And someone who supports this type of evil does not deserve my respect and will not have it. So, your party can burn cities and fabricate lies about other politicians. They can shut down social media accounts and lie on their news programs and in their publications and I totally get it. They are inherently evil in their heart and can’t be otherwise and will do anything to retain power. But really, you want to piss off 80 million hard working patriotic Americans? That’s probably not your best idea because I have a hunch those 80 million people have figured out a thing or two about the system as well and are growing tired and restless about the continued lies coming from their government, politicians and media. And while I’m on the subject, I read that President Trump will not attend Biden’s inauguration. I don’t blame him. I won’t even watch. I have better things to do with my time than to watch someone who supports the killing of unborn children take the oath of office to support and defend the constitution. That would be laughable if it wasn’t so sad. I Say Amen Robert I totally understand Jesus wanting Jerry to be with Him. What I don’t understand is why I was so blessed to be chosen to be his wife of 47 years. Walking alongside this man of God, this man of prayer, this man full of the Holy Spirit has been the greatest honor and deepest joy of my life. Not only did he teach me everything I know about God, He was my counselor, prayer warrior, Bible teacher, problem solver, and the man I loved. Jerry was an example of overflowing gratitude even in life’s smallest moments. As kind, affectionate, gentle, warm, and loving as he was, when the question was my will or God’s will, I fought a losing battle every time. I’m so very grateful that he held me to a standard of excellence in my spiritual journey that continually stretched me and forced me to dig deeper and reach higher than I could have possibly done alone.
I’ve never known a season as challenging as this one, Jerry and Luke, our family. My heart is shattered, but the gracious, merciful and loving hand of God has continually pierced the darkness in unimaginable ways. Everyone is saying to me how they would give anything to have witnessed Jerry’s glorious homecoming, the moment he came face to face with his Savior, the One for whom He lived his whole life. Jerry’s rescue was a divine appointment on so many levels. Covid did not take my husband. Jesus did. My sweet dad went home to be with Jesus yesterday. He loved the Lord with all his heart and showed God’s love by the way he lived his life. Jerry Linhares always had a smile on his face and never met a stranger. He was a wonderful, devoted father to me- always kind, patient, and wise. He taught me so much about life, and I am forever grateful he was my dad and best friend. My mom and I are thankful for the full, fruitful 80 years he had on this Earth. I know he’s overjoyed to be with his Heavenly Father, and we’ll see him again. I love your forever daddy. Prayer Request,
