Romans 10:2
A funny testimony now, but not necessarily then… A young believer who we will call Peter was
going through a challenging time in his life. After watching and listening to a pastor share about
his fasting experience, Peter thought fasting would be a great way to solve his existing dilemmas
and get closer to God. When looking back at this time, however, Peter now recognizes that his
zeal back then was misguided at best. In other words, much of his efforts towards spirituality and
God was being done in his own strength and by his own wisdom. Getting back, Peter set a goal of
going 14 days without water and food; however, time and time again Peter would blow it in reaching
this goal and then he would start all over again. Weeks passed on and Peter became physically and
emotionally weak and very disillusioned as he was seeing no breakthrough whatsoever. Peter then
came to a point of wrestling with whether he was even supposed to be fasting or not. When seeking
an answer from God on this, a janitor (who was a Christian believer) came up to him and asked, “Are
you fasting?” (Note that Peter did not know this man nor vice versa) Being called out, Peter broke down
in tears and acknowledged that he was. The janitor then said, “The Lord says ‘Go eat a hamburger!’”
